“Now I know I must have lost my mind,” Wakefield said, shaking his head. “How does an eight-year-old boy vanish as if he freakin’ evaporated like mist? What am I not seeing here?”

“Rewind to a minute after Andy enters the restroom,” Sally said to the security guard, who did this. “Now, pay close attention to the lower-left corner of the screen,” she said. “Play the footage, please.”

They watched this section of the screen as the footage played out. After a few seconds, there was a brief flicker of light in the bottom corner of the screen as a moth flew in front of the camera.

“Is that what we’re supposed to be looking at?” Wakefield asked. “A moth? Seriously? What does that have to do with anything?”

“Now fast forward to the point we stopped before this,” Sally said to the guard, ignoring Wakefield. “Keep your eye on the same corner of the screen.”

The guard did this, and they saw the same moth flying in the corner of the screen.

“I still don’t get it,” Wakefield grumbled. “So there’s a moth flying around the camera, so what?”

“The moth’s flight pattern is exactly the same, Mr. Wakefield,” Sally said. “This tells me one thing: the footage was looped. That moth didn’t fly in front of the camera a second time; if it had, its flight pattern would have been different. The odds of it having exactly the same flight trajectory are lottery winning odds. And, what’s more, the kidnappers have used this exact method before. They hacked into the aquarium’s computer network and looped camera footage so they wouldn’t be caught on it. Someone did enter the bathroom right after Andy, and they knocked him out and carried him out—it’s just that the camera didn’t catch it because it was hacked.”

“Son of a bitch,” Wakefield murmured, his jaw-dropping wide open with shock. “Wait right here, I need to get hold of my IT people right away!”

“It’s too late now,” Sally said with a sigh. “These guys are good; they don’t leave behind any traces. The only thing you can do is strengthen your network protection to stop it from happening again.”

“You think they hacked all the cameras?” Wakefield asked. “The whole system?”

“Since we don’t seem to have any footage of anyone carrying a child—or a child-sized package—out of the building, then yes, I assume they hacked all of the cameras. All of the cameras that would have caught them, anyway.”

“Dammit, I can’t believe this,” Wakefield muttered, still utterly shocked. “These are some seriously devious, sneaky, sly bastards, huh?”

“Yes, they are,” Sally said. “But we’re going to catch them,” she added resolutely. “I promise you, we’re going to catch these people.”

“I sure as hell hope you do, not only for the sake of rescuing those kids. This is gonna do some serious damage to the business here. Nobody’s gonna want to bring their kids to a movie here knowing that they might get abducted by a couple of psychos!”

“Like I said, we’re going to do everything we can to catch these people.
